The New I-9 and Employee Handbook M-274 Have Finally Arrived

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Logo

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released the newly revised Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification Form, as well as the M-274 “Handbook for Employers Guidance for Completing Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility VeriÀcation Form)”, both of which became available for use beginning March 8, 2013

This updated version of the form replaces prior versions ((Rev. 02/02/09) N and (Rev. 08/07/09) Y), which can no longer be used as of May 7, 2013. Employers must use the I-9 to verify the identity and employment eligibility of all new employees hired after November 6, 1986.
This revised form features additional data requirements, including sections specific to foreign passport information, telephone numbers and email addresses. The new two-page layout does not include the list of acceptable documents or form instructions. According to the new format, employees must complete the first page of the form while employers must complete page 2. According to the USCIS, employers must begin using the new I-9 immediately but a 60-day grace period will be granted to implement this change. After May 7, 2013, employers who fail to use the revised form can be subject to penalties under Section 274(A) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), as enforced by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).

Employers should follow the instructions found in the revised 2-274 “Handbook for Employers Guidance for Completing Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form)”.  Click this link for the revised handbook: M-274-Handbook-for-Employers. To download a copy of the new Form I-9 and corresponding instructions, please download here: USCIS Form I-9 OMB No. 1615-0047 Expires 03/31/2016.

Workplace Violence: What Qualifies?

Here’s a quote that has always stuck in my head:

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” — Fred Rogers

Luckily, we were able to feature one of these helpers on a webinar on January 24th. Carol Fredrickson, from Violence-Free, joined us to give a presentation called “Workplace Violence: Warning Signs, Red Flags & What Puts You at Risk!” During her presentation, she showed this slide, which emphasizes the kinds of violence that can occur in the workplace. Perhaps the most stunning information on the slide is the identification of a few acts that aren’t violent in a literal sense, but rather on a psychological level.

All of these, some obvious, some not so much, qualify as violence in the workplace. Carol’s advice should you spot this in your office? If you SEE something, SAY something!

I highly urge you to watch Carol’s entire webinar, and to take the time to evaluate the policies you have in place to prevent these actions from even coming close to happening.
